Empowering Education in Timbuktu: A Step Toward Change

Updated: May 16

On Friday, November 15th, Emancipate HOPE successfully completed a mission in the sacred and historic city of Timbuktu, within the premises of the Franco-Arabic Medersa Aquib Sidi Yehiya. As part of our ongoing commitment to education access and community support, our team distributed 50 school kits to children and 50 bags of 50kg provisions to their parents—an effort to alleviate economic burdens and encourage school attendance.

However, our work in Timbuktu has revealed deeper challenges that require urgent attention. During our mission, we visited the Medersa Franco-Arabe Ibn Abass, located southwest of the city, and witnessed firsthand the difficult conditions in which children are learning. With limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of external assistance, the dedicated educators at the school are working tirelessly to provide quality education and hope for the future—but they need support.

This mission was made possible thanks to the unwavering contributions of our sponsor, Mr. Issa Arsina Cissé, and the invaluable support of the Governor, mr Daouda Traoré, of the Tombouctou region and the Ministry of Social Development. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Timbuktu community for their warmth and hospitality.

While we celebrate this milestone, our work is far from over. The conditions we observed reinforce our belief that education should never be a privilege—it should be a right for every child, regardless of their circumstances.
